- I am the managing editor of the new (C)ontinuous (I)nformation (S)ervice at
- CD-ROM Review magazine. We are a data collection service and independent
- CD-ROM testing facility. I am interested in any questions or comments you have
- regarding CD-ROM Review and I will reply as quickly as possible to any queries.
- CIS and the CD-ROM Review laboratory will publish a quarterly lab report and
- monthly newsletter aimed at vendors, buyers, technical people, and those who
- want to know what is out there in terms of CD-ROM discs/hardware/retrieval
- software, whether it works or not, what it does, and where you can get it. If
- you have any immediate questions about our service and how to subscribe, please
- call myself or Roger Strukhoff at 800441-4403, or 603-924-9471. The CIS is
- intended to bring together the vast numbers of CD-ROM people who are out there,
- doing their own thing in their own corner, and interested in what the rest of
- the industry is doing. -- Jeff

- CD-ROM Review publishes a fairly complete list of CD-ROMs out there in the
- marketplace. We are about to go monthly, and plan to update the list every
- three months or so. If you wish to get a copy or subscription to _hD-ROM
- Review, call our subscription dept. at 800-258-5473. -- Jeff

- Good Morning! I'm excited to see the response to the CDROM Forum the past
- week. There is definitely a substantial level of interest in the technology
- and the applications being developed. I am with Discovery Systems and I hope
- to add to the discussions relative to production requirements, timeframes and
- costs. Please feel free to contact me directly through EasyPlex or through the
- Forum.

- _much_ cheaper than AppleLink for correspondence, although not as flexible in
- terms of formatted files, etc.

- Apple has promised release of the High Sierra/ISO drivers for the Mac & Ap2 by
- June or so. I haven't heard of any discs shipping yet in HFS format, but it
- would be pointless anyway, since Apple's drive isn't shipping yet.
-
- I doubt that CD ROM will replace home libraries anytime soon, although it may
- replace other sorts of libraries rather quicker.

- Hello, Jeff. I was recently up in Seattle (for only the second time) to attend
- the Third International CDROM Conference Microsoft put on. I like the city and
- think you chose a nice part of the country to which to migrate.
-
- Your hopes for CDROM discs with useful (and reasonably priced) information will
- certainly have to be realized if the technology is to become a business. As you
- have probably heard or read, some of those items have already made it to CDROM
- (see some of the .PR files in library 3 of this forum), and more are in the
- works. We are working on a compilation of titles to be posted in library 3. I
- would expect your area to have quite a few companies working with CDROM, either
- developing tools or products.
-
- My interests - family, camping, cards (bridge), computers, and other
- miscellaneous oddities.
-
- Welcome aboard.

- Hello, Paul. With a wordprocessing business, I would think the Amdek
- Laserdrive-1 system with Microsoft Bookshelf would be a reasonable choice. The
- drive can do handle both data and audio, and the player (made by Hitachi) seems
- to be turning up everywhere. If you have no interest in Bookshelf, getting the
- player from Radio Shack (they also will be carrying the same Hitachi unit
- (CDR-1503S)) would give you a handy means to get the drive serviced if it
- should ever fail. With some of the software and discs that will be out, with
- that drive if you're not doing your own composition, you could be listening to
- someone else's.

-
- Hello, Sherwood. With CDROM you could get 650 megs on line to your Compaq 386.
- However, if you need read/write access to your media there are other
- alternatives. There are some large disks (150+ megs) that have device drivers
- permitting volumes larger than 32megs. The IBM PC Software forum might have
- more details on those items. WORM (Write Once Read Many) may also be an option
- - they have capacities exceeding 1 gigabyte. Exactly how you plan to use the
- storage will be a major factor in selecting the media type.

- I see the DVI technology as an improved version of CD-ROM. CD-ROM now is
- capable of presenting the user with integrated audio, text and graphics. I see
- DVI as the next step in giving information to people. Instead of a "still"
- picture, or limited animation, DVI will bring the graphic to life with real
- time video quality presentations. This is obviously not necessary for all
- applications, but it will be an attractive alternative. Bob Helfant
